Hubert Isaac Smith Private G/63044 - 7th Bn. Middlesex Regiment Killed in action on Tuesday 27th August 1918 Buried in Suzanne Cemetery, Somme, France Hubert Isaac Smith (born 27 th  August 1897) was the son of Herbert Isaac and Jessie Smith (née Williams) – both families longstanding in Gnosall parish. Hubert’s father was variously a coal dealer and publican (probably at The Horns) on Gnosall High Street, and by 1911, a carpenter in Stafford. Hubert went to live with an aunt and uncle (William & Eliza Arkinstall from Gnosall) in Bradley, from an early age and, was later adopted by them. With the commencement of WWI Hubert Isaac joined the 7 th  Bn. Middlesex Regiment and was then posted to the 7 th  Bn. London Regiment. In August 1918 he was fighting in the area around the village of Suzanne on the Somme, France. Suzanne had been lost to the Germans in March of that year but was won back by the Australians on the 26 th  August. Hubert Isaac Smith was killed there the day afterwards, during ‘mopping-up’ operations. It was his 21 st  birthday.
