Arthur Thomas Dodd

In 1885 Thomas Dodd, married Sarah Jane Anslow in St Mary Church at Moreton. She
was the daughter of William and Mary Anslow from Bromstead.

By 1891 Thomas and Sarah were living in Cowley and had three children: Alice, Arthur
Thomas and John. Thomas was working for the railways.
By 1901 the family had moved to Derrington, Seighford, where Thomas was still with the
railways and had become a Foreman Platelayer.
The children at home with himself and Sarah Jane were Arthur Thomas, John and Herbert
(aged 8), all born Gnosall Heath. There was also a boarder, William Henry Jones, a 20
year old farm bailiff from Lilleshall.
Arthur enlisted in Lichfield as a regular in early August 1907 signing up for 7 years service
then 5 years as a reserve.
On the 1911 census he was stationed at Shorncliffe in Kent.
Arthur married Ellen Williams of Blackpool in the first quarter of 1914. The registration was
recorded in the Newport, Shropshire district.
Arthur was serving as Private 8522 of the North Staffordshire Regiment when he arrived at
St Nazaire in France on 10 September 1914 as one of the original contingent of the
regiment’s 1st Battalion.
Records state that Corporal 8522 A. T. Dodd of the 1st Battalion of the North Staffordshire
Regiment died on 21 June 1916 age 27 at the Royal Victoria Hospital near Southampton.
His death certificate indicates he had typhoid
